Stand out from the Crowd with Hair to Turn Heads at Your Wedding or Prom!

Whether you’re looking at bridal styles, prom styles or hairstyles for a special occasion, this hair guide can help! We’ll take you through all of the latest trends and styles so that your hair has the wow factor on your big day!

If you’re going to a prom, this is probably the biggest event in your life so far and it will be until you get married! That’s why we’re incorporating these two events into one great hair guide for your special day. We want you to choose a hairstyle that you love but that also makes you feel like a VIP!

Wedding hair up-dos

It has become a tradition that brides wear their hair up. Choosing an up-do doesn’t make you old fashioned, however. Whilst keeping with tradition, you can certainly choose a modern hairstyle to suit your wedding theme and style. Before you look at different styles with your hairdresser, it’s a good idea to show him or her what your dress looks like. This means your hairstyle will match the theme of your wedding or occasion. For example, if your dress is a 50s style dress, your stylist will be able to come up with a stunning up-do to go with it.

Even though traditional wedding up-dos are still preferred for many brides, stylists have seen a resurgence of retro and vintage hairstyles. You can also incorporate a veil, some flowers, a clip or a jeweled tiara into your hairstyle. Make sure you bring any accessories to your consultations and hair trials too.

Wedding hair worn down

If you’re struggling to know whether to have your hair up or down for your wedding or prom, look at the neckline of your dress. For a dress that is strapless or has spaghetti straps or a low back, long, curly hair that cascades to one side or down the back can really look sensational. If all down isn’t your thing, you can dress this style up with plaits or in a half-up, half-down style.

Short bridal and prom hairstyles

Your short hair is actually quite versatile! There are hundreds of different bridal and prom hairstyles for shorter hair. First things first, however – you need a really great cut. Whatever the look you’re wanting to achieve, you can add texture and volume really well to short hair and you can dress it nicely with bridal accessories.

Braids and Plaits for Proms and Special Occasions

These are great for prom hair or wedding party hair. Plaits are flirty and fun so this could be the best prom style to go for. There are loads of different types of plaits and braids so take a look online so that you know what to ask your stylist for. Have a look at fishtail plaits, waterfall braids, up-dos and buns that incorporate small plaits, and pinned-up braids.

Make your curls glam for prom

For a true red-carpet feel, go curly! Curls are so easy to achieve these days and you don’t need to go to drastic lengths by getting a perm (although this is an option too, of course). Stylists are super skilled in all sorts of curls so whether you’re after spiral curls, corkscrew curls, or waves, they’ll be able to achieve the right look for you.

Up-dos for parties and proms

Up-dos are still really popular for proms and that’s because there are so many different choices! If you want to go traditional, why not choose an elegant bun? Or, you could get something a little more edgy like a side bun!

Prom styles for short hair

If you have short hair, you should really make sure you have a decent cut and blow dry before your big day. You can still have a really great style added to a short hairdo. For example, you can make a short style more sophisticated by incorporating a low parting on one of the sides and making the hair super smooth and slick on that side. Another thing to consider is micro-plaits, which are really on-trend right now. Play around with waves, volume, and asymmetrical looks. The possibilities are endless!

Hair Color Mistakes to Avoid Before Your Wedding

Hair Color Mistakes to Avoid Before Your Wedding:

It is recommended you start planning six months or more prior to your big day. Consulting with a your colorist will avoid mistakes, and provides time to work out your ideas and keep your hair looking healthy, and beautiful. Though, if you’ve picked a stylist with experience and prior knowledge to your hair, you’re more likely to avoid those heart breaking mistakes and are likely in good hands.

Drastic Changes:

On your wedding day, you want to look like your true, beautiful self. You don’t want to look through your wedding photos years later and regret the decisions you made for your hair. It’s a night you want to remember for the rest of your life. Try to avoid making too drastic of a change to your hair, to steer clear from haunting your memory with a bad hair day.  Stay true to your color, or style.

Switching Your Stylist:

If you get your hair colored regularly chances are, you already frequent a particular hair stylist. If you don’t have a regular colorist, try to find one as soon as you get engaged. Doing this will provide you the time to get to know your stylist, and for them to get to know your hair. Color is a tricky trade, and the better your stylist knows your hair the less room there is for a mistake. Start planning your hair color at least six months in advance and consult your stylist with your ideas. The more communication there is between you, the better off you are. Giving yourself this time to plan will take a lot of weight off your shoulders and takes away the panic before your big day. (You’ve got enough to worry about!)

Poor Appointment Planning:

Planning is a huge part of your wedding day. Why should your hair be any different? It’s a good idea to get together with your stylist and discuss your plan. Figuring out what to do and when, and how long it will take. Doing so will help you avoid over-doing it and risking the damage of your hair.

Neglecting a Full:

If you regularly get highlights, keeping up with them before your wedding day is key. If you’re partial, to receiving a partial, it’s recommended that you try a full. Getting a full foil will provide a seamless look on your big day, adding a beautiful variety of color to your hair. It will keep you from showing any dark spots, or root-age. Doing so will take some planning, making sure they don’t waste their money on a service right beforehand.

DIY Color:

Doing your own color is highly advised against, even if you’re a professional. Even with a routine at-home color kit its strongly suggested you see a professional. At-home color doesn’t include new hues, or highlights of any kind. If money is an issue, speaking to your new or frequent stylist will help you figure out just what exactly you can achieve with your budget. When you try to do your own color, you risk messing up; in turn costing you more money, time, and effort.

Lack of planning; Extensions & Color Matching:

More often than not, the bride will want long, beautiful, flowing hair for their big day. Though not planning and thinking through your process may just cause a nightmare. Planning months in advance will help you avoid such disasters. From clip ins, to tape ins, you and your stylist need to go over how to maintain your extensions and keep them clean and beautiful. Failing to take care of your extensions can cost you and arm and a leg, not to mention your time. It’s advised you buy the hair in advance with your stylist to ensure your extensions will fit your needs.

How to Use Dry Shampoo!

The Best Way to Use Fresh Dust Dry Shampoo!

If you do it right, this product will keep your hair looking amazing for long days without the need to use wet shampoo.

The Morning After Dust by L’Oreal Professionnel is one of my favorite product and it is one we should all have in our beauty counter at home.

When I have my hair consultation with my new clients at Westport Hair & Co, CT some of the key questions to ask are:

How many times a week do you wash your hair?

How oily or dry is your hair between washes?

Many of them respond they wash their hair 2-3 times a week while others say they wash their hair only one time a week. The latter is because they say it takes them too long for their hair to dry, especially in the winter season, or they don’t have that extra morning time when they are in the shower.

Don’t you feel the same way?

Yes, I totally get it. We don’t have that extra time and that is why many times we don’t bother washing our hair during the week and we have to walk with oily/ greasy hair, which makes us feel awkward!

My solution for you and my lovely clientele is to send them home with the amazing Morning After Dust Dry Shampoo from L’Oreal Professionnel.

But your question may now be how do I use this dry shampoo?

Well, it is very easy if you follow my steps and you will be glad about the results it gives to your hair.

It is important to section hair at least 4 inches wide.

Hold Fresh Dust Dry Shampoo can 8 inches away from scalp and spray 1 inch from the scalp. This step prevents the dry shampoo from accumulating too much on top of your crown.

Now massage the dry shampoo throughout and by doing this you will remove any oil or dirt build up you may have in your roots and hair. This will spread the shampoo even more and it will add some volume to your hair.

Brush hair with the Wet Brush, one of my other favorite hair brushes to use in my salon company, throughout from roots to ends. Brushing your hair with the Wet Brush will help eliminating any residue left in the hair.  This will leave hair cleaner and more bouncy.

This technique will be very helpful when a regular shampoo is not present but we always recommend shampooing your hair to preserve healthy hair strands.
